Marcus Castro worked with The Fayetteville Observer for 27 years as a News Photographer and Assistant Photo Editor. He served as an Army Photojournalist with the 82nd Airborne Division for nine years. As a civilian, he covered Fort Bragg soldiers responding to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti January 2010. Marcus spent Dec. 2009 documenting helicopter units from the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade in Kandahar and Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan. Previous assignments also include an embed with the 16th Military Police Brigade while they were training the Iraqi Police Force, South of Baghdad. He was also embedded with 82nd Airborne Infantry Units during the Afghanistan elections in Khost, September 2005, and covered the elections in Central Baghdad in January 2005. Some of his most noteworthy photo assignments have been in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Kosovo, Bosnia, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama. His images have been published on the cover of Time Magazine, in Newsweek and displayed in the Smithsonian Institute.
